Welcome Message

Dear friends and colleagues, It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2026 International Trail Sports Conference (ITSC). Trail sports, led by trail running, are growing rapidly around the world. As more people head into the mountains and the outdoors, and as new races and destinations emerge, the landscape of trail sports is changing just as quickly. Yet as important as growth itself are the experience and standards that sustain it. How can we stage safer, better races? How should athletes prepare for the challenges of nature? And how can trail sports build lasting relationships with local communities, the natural environment and people? These are the questions that led us to create ITSC. ITSC aims to be an international forum where race organizers, athletes, coaches, medical and safety professionals, and people from the technology and tourism sectors come together to share their first-hand experience and knowledge, and to explore together how trail sports can move forward. The first ITSC will address the issues the trail community is facing on the ground today: race operations and safety, athlete health and preparation, on-course medical care, technology-driven safety management, and the links between trail races, local communities and tourism. By sharing experience and case studies from around the world and bringing different perspectives into dialogue, we hope to find better practices that each of us can take back home. Our hope is that ITSC, launching in Wonju in 2026, will be more than a one-off event, and will grow into a platform where people in trail sports from around the world continue to meet, learn and collaborate, with new questions and experiences added every year. The future of trail sports will not be shaped by any single person or organization. It begins with the experiences and conversations of all of us who are building this sport together.
